Abdominal Conditions

Colon

The surgeons at Estrella Surgical Group offer the most advanced open and minimally invasive techniques available for colon conditions. Common medical conditions that we treat include cancer of the colon, removal of tumors or polyps, and diverticulitis. Most of the colectomy procedures we perform can be done laparoscopically. Polyps of the Colon

Colonic polyps are extra pieces of tissue that grow on the colon and are usually discovered during a colonoscopy or after a patient is examined due to symptoms. Most polyps are not dangerous, but because some may become cancerous, doctors remove polyps and test them.

Symptoms

  • A change in bowel habits
  • Blood in the stool
  • Frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness, or cramps
  • Constipation or diarrhea lasting more than a week

Diagnosis

Tests to diagnose tumors of the colon include:

  • A colonoscopy-during the procedure, your doctor may perform a biopsy
  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound of the rectum
  • MRI scan of the abdomen and/or pelvis
  • CT scan of the abdomen and/or pelvis

Treatment

Treatment is usually removal during colonoscopy. However, on occasion surgery may be required.
